New BHA chief urges for new thinking
Ufi Ibrahim, the new chief executive of the British Hospitality Association has called for new thinking and fresh action under the new government.
Formerly on the World Travel and Tourism Council, Ibrahim announced her vision in an introductory message to members.
‘As demand for leisure, travel and recreation continues to grow across the world, the potential for the hospitality industry to grow its contribution to GDP and jobs across Britain is hugely significant.
‘Hospitality is a key pillar of our country’s economy and of its future. The BHA members represent 40,000 establishments and employ 500,000 people directly. We - the hotels, restaurants and food and service management companies of Britain - are the engines of tourism, the UK’s fifth largest industry, now worth £115bn.
‘However, Britain is acting upon a highly competitive international tourism stage, which is becoming more challenging every year.’
Ibrahim expressed her ‘delight’ towards her new role and added that the BHA's mission is clear - ‘to work closely together with industry, government and all our partners to strengthen and consolidate the hospitality industry’s role in driving the forward-thinking policies that will enable the industry to meet our many future challenges.
‘Only by doing this will we be able to sustain the industry’s profitable growth – growth that is critical to our future success.’
The 38-year-old who has extensive experience in travel and tourism, advising on policymaking with governments and industry across the world, took over from Bob Cotton as chief executive on 19 July.
Cotton held the post of chief executive for 10 years.
